Commitment to Action

Through Inclusive Excellence, Cal Poly Pomona demonstrates our commitment to the urgent and ongoing work of creating and sustaining an inclusive campus climate in which all are welcomed and respected, and our diversity is valued. 

To thoroughly honor our university’s values of inclusivity and social responsibility, we must not only continue to ask ourselves what we are doing to identify and dismantle systemic racism and inequities, but perpetually pursue tangible actions with meaningful results. As such, we will hold ourselves accountable by transparently tracking, communicating and monitoring past and present actions to identify and dismantle systemic racism and inequities.

This webpage includes the steps we are taking to follow through on Our Commitment to Action, which we made in July 2020. For each action below we include a description, the status and details of our progress to date. There is much work to be done and we are wholly committed to aligning our words, actions and deeds to achieve real change.

Our progress will be displayed below and categorized using four stages of action:

Actions to Dismantle Systemic Inequity

High Fiving

Police Advisory Task Force

Status: Achieved

Establish a community-based Police Advisory Task Force to partner with UPD on campus safety and engagement.

The Task Force met regularly during the 2020-2021 academic year, resulting in the production of a final report with recommendations.

Inclusive Campus Survey

Status: Achieved

Conduct a campus-wide survey to assess matters of access, equity and inclusion across the campus.

The survey was completed in 2021.

College Diversity and Inclusion

Status: Walking

Require colleges to identify and commit to concrete actions they will take to improve the diversity of their students, faculty and staff and create inclusive classrooms, practices and environments and hold the leadership accountable to those actions as part of annual performance assessments.

Progress to Date: The College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences has developed an Inclusive Excellence Manifesto and launched an Inclusive Excellence Committee. The College of Environmental Design has developed and launched a Diversity Assessment and Plan of Action (DAPA).

Staff Diversity and Practices

Status: Talking

Require each division to identify and commit to concrete actions they will take to improve the diversity of their staff and create anti-racist practices and environments.

Progress to Date: We have upcoming meetings with vice presidents and associate vice presidents to begin this work.

Actively review and amend, as needed, campus policies and procedures for exclusionary practices.

Progress to Date: All complaint-related policies and procedures are currently under review.

Student Barriers

Status: Walking

Actively review and amend, as needed, campus policies and procedures for exclusionary practices.

Progress to Date: In collaboration with Enrollment Management, Student Success and Innovation, and Community Campus Partnerships and Student Experience, we are looking at our efforts toward admitted students that encourage them to enroll.

Employment Barriers

Status: Walking

Identify and systematically eliminate barriers to employment access and success.

Progress to Date: In collaboration with EODA and Faculty Affairs, we are analyzing past applicant and hiring data to identify potential barriers for prospective employees.

Educational Programming

Status: Walking

Increase educational programming around race, racism, equity and inclusion.

Progress to Date: We are participating in the CSU-systemwide “Moving Beyond Bias” training. EODA incorporated an implicit bias training in their course catalogue. We have been conducting diversity, equity and inclusion trainings for colleges and departments.

Faculty Advisory Equity Board

Status: Walking

In partnership between the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Diversity and the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence, develop a Faculty Equity Advisory Board charged with developing an equity-minded faculty pedagogy professional development series.

Progress to Date: The Faculty Equity Advisory Board has been established.
