About

Dr. Myriam Casimir has been a faculty member in Cal Poly Pomona’s Education Department since 2009. Dr. Casimir teaches foundations courses for all pre-service teacher candidates. She also coordinates the Bilingual Program, teaches the Spanish-English bilingual methods course, and advises all bilingual teacher candidates. She loves preparing brilliant, committed teacher candidates to become excellent teachers of ethnically diverse, multilingual children.
In her research, Dr. Casimir analyzes and theorizes children of immigrants’ sociolinguistic identity construction in monolingual and bilingual schooling contexts. She also examines Latino immigrant parents’ experiences as they work to become bona fide members of US public school communities.
Prior to coming to Cal Poly Pomona, Dr. Casimir taught in elementary bilingual and dual language immersion classrooms for a decade. She also worked with WestEd’s Teacher Professional Development team.
Dr. Casimir grew up in Mexico with her Haitian-origin family. She is a “native bilingual,” having learned both French and Spanish in early childhood. She learned English in late childhood when her family moved to the Caribbean, and has continued to learn multiple languages including Haitian Creole, Brazilian Portuguese, and German. She has always loved teaching diverse children and getting to know their parents.
