Global Education Institute Welcomes the students from China University of Mining and Technology

On Monday September 29, 2019, Global Education Institute (GEI) of the College of the Extended University (CEU) welcomed a group of 40 students and a lead faculty member from China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT).  Dr. Joseph Rencis, Dean of the College of Engineering, addressed the group at the Welcome Ceremony.  CUMT is ranked top 100 among over 3,000 higher education institutions in China.  The students and lead faculty member participated in a two-week special customized training program on “Civil Engineering”. This was the third student program that CUMT has sent to Cal Poly Pomona since 2018.

These students were selected and sent by the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering, one of the leading schools of CUMT.  During their stay at Cal Poly Pomona, they learned about civil engineering management, geospatial design, structural engineering, and construction engineering through the forms of lectures, workshops, round table discussions, campus activities and final presentations.   All the lectures and workshops were delivered by faculty members from Department of Civil Engineering in College of Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. 

“Through this program, the participating students have gained a better understanding of American campus life”, said Professor Gao Yanan, the lead faculty member, “some of them have already showed great interest in applying for master’s degree program in civil engineering at Cal Poly Pomona.”  Professor Gao has been a visiting scholar at Cal Poly Pomona twice, and he has visited Cal Poly Pomona for six times in the past ten years.  Now he is working with the Department of Civil Engineering on programs for CPP professors to lecture at CUMT this December.
