Edison Could Initiate Rotating Weekend Power Outages That Affect Entire Campus
Summary: Southern California Edison could trigger rotating power outages that would affect the entire campus if extremely high temperatures remain during the holiday weekend. The duration of a rotating outage is typically one hour. Laboratory equipment such as research freezers should be checked for proper operation to avoid the loss of contents.
Reason for rotating outage: Keep the state energy grid from becoming overloaded and avoid widescale shutdowns.
How does this affect me? Check laboratory equipment that contains research material for proper operation. Most equipment can withstand a restart after an outage, but some equipment may require attention. Facilities Planning & Management crews would be responding to primary building equipment such as fire alarms, elevators and HVAC systems and would not be able to respond to specialized equipment.
What do I need to do? If a rotating power outage occurs, safely evacuate the building until power is restored by SCE. Campus crews will reset equipment and ensure that building systems are brought back online and working properly before buildings can be reoccupied.
