Extreme Heat Could Trigger Rotating Power Outage; Campus Community Urged to Conserve Electricity
Summary: Extreme high temperatures forecast to last through the week could force Southern California Edison to initiate rotating power outages across the region. To help avoid such outages, the campus community is urged to follow Flex Alert guidelines and limit power use from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
Reason for rotating outage: Keep the state’s energy grid from becoming overloaded and avoid widescale power shutdowns.
How does this affect me? Conserve electricity usage on campus and at home to help avoid power outages.
What do I need to do? The campus community is urged to set thermostats to 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, turn off unneeded lighting, keep window blinds shut, unplug unused electrical devices, avoid using high-energy consuming equipment and avoid charging electric vehicles from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. For other ways to conserve power, go to the Flex Alert webpage. Check laboratory equipment, computers and other electronic devices for proper operation and protection against power outage. If an electrical outage does occur, safely evacuate the building until power is restored by SCE. Campus crews will reset equipment and ensure that building systems are brought back online and working properly before buildings can be reoccupied.
