Cal Poly Pomona to Offer California's Only Master of Science in Hospitality Management

Building from its renowned undergraduate program, The Collins College of Hospitality Management at Cal Poly Pomona has launched a Master of Science in Hospitality Management (MSHM). The graduate program is the only hospitality management degree program of its kind in California.
The California State University Board of Trustees voted to approve the program on March 17. The approval allows classes to begin in the fall of 2010. Applications are being accepted through Aug. 1, 2010.
The MSHM degree will expose students to advanced management concepts including accounting and finance, marketing, strategic management, human resources management, as well as qualitative and quantitative analytical skills as they pertain specifically to the hospitality industry.
“The Collins College is committed to advancing the field of hospitality, and part of doing that is assuring that improvements continue in areas of research and education,” said Dean Andy Feinstein. “This program fills a critical need for postgraduate hospitality management education in California.”
The degree is designed to prepare graduates with the depth of hospitality knowledge and skills that will equip them to make an immediate impact in the highly competitive hospitality industry. The degree also provides the foundation for a terminal degree (Ph.D.) at an academic institution.
“A MSHM degree will open doors in both the hospitality industry and academia,” said Dr. Myong Jae (MJ) Lee, director of graduate studies.
The master’s program will be self-supported by student fees and administered through the College of the Extended University. The cost of the program will be comparable to other CSU graduate programs. This model allows international and out-of-state students to pay the same rate as California residents.
“We thought outside-the-box and have used a business model that will not rely on state resources,” Feinstein said.
