Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a play that is set at the beginning of the French Revolution and features a pair of jaded aristocrats (Vicomte de Valmont and Marquis de Merteuil) and their cynical plot to seduce and destroy the reputation of a young girl fresh out of the convent. Merteuil is in the process of being dumped by her current lover for Cecile de Volanges (fresh out of the convent).
