The EFL department is having a Translation Slam this May 4 at the Bronco Student Center (Ursa Minor) from 1:00-3:00pm (See flyer attached).
Translation slams, or Translation duels are an innovative event with professional literary translators that compete to best embody an author's voice. These are also open forums where to see how translation happens, what different readings may a paragraph have, and what constitutes the art of translation itself. We invite you to join our first EFL Lingua Franca Speakers Translation Slam event and to participate in this open forum where to further think how translation works.
In this first Translation Slam we will be examining Iván Répila's recent, and most acclaimed novel The boy who stole Attila's horse, which envisions an allegory of the current Spanish economical crisis.

We will have two translators on stage: Sophie Hughes, the translator of the novel for Pushkin Press (US Publication: November 10, 2015); and Madeline Ríos, the owner of Ríos Translation and interpreter for Rigoberta Menchú during her visits in the US Southwest.
Those interested in attending the event may request a leaflet with the translations of the two translators (English) and the original (Spanish) to
martaa@cpp.edu. We encourage professional translators, faculty, and students to participate in this all-inclusive event and workshop. The event will be conducted in English.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking for non CPP faculty, students or staff is 6 dollars.
