Los Angeles, CA - The Cal Poly Pomona Wind Ensemble has achieved a historic milestone, recording at the renowned Newman Scoring Stage at 20th Century Fox Studios. This momentous occasion underscores the ensemble’s musical excellence and marks a significant step forward in the university’s commitment to fostering top-tier performance opportunities for its students.
Under the direction of Dr. Rickey Badua, Director of Bands & Associate Professor of Music, the Cal Poly Pomona Wind Ensemble recorded James David's E Ala Ē: Arise & Awaken, a groundbreaking wind ensemble piece influenced by Native Hawaiian folk music. As the first of its nature and kind, this work represents a significant contribution to the repertoire, blending traditional Hawaiian elements with the dynamic textures of the wind ensemble. This recording showcases the exceptional talent of the student musicians in a setting that has hosted legendary film scores, including Star Wars, Titanic, and Avatar. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity provided students with invaluable professional recording experience at a studio that has shaped the sound of Hollywood for nearly a century.
“This experience was truly transformative for our students,” said Dr. Badua. “Not only did they perform in a world-class recording environment, but they also gained firsthand insight into the professional music industry, an experience that will serve them for years to come.”
The Newman Scoring Stage, named after legendary composer Alfred Newman, has been home to some of the most iconic scores in cinematic history. By recording at this historic venue, the Cal Poly Pomona Wind Ensemble students join a distinguished legacy of musicians who have contributed to the rich tapestry of film music.
The Cal Poly Pomona University Band program continues to cultivate an environment where aspiring musicians can refine their craft while participating in projects that bridge academia and the professional world through “become by doing” experiences.
