Cal Poly Pomona’s National Model United Nations team received the Outstanding Delegation Award at the annual conference in New York.
In addition, several students were honored for position papers and committee work, making the team one of the most decorated in Cal Poly Pomona history.
Twenty students from majors all across the university join the Model UN Team in January, playing the role of Argentina at the conference. The conference simulates the committee work of the United Nations where students are assigned to committees and learn about the dynamics of international relations and diplomacy. About 200 universities and colleges participate, each representing a UN-member nation.
In addition to winning the Outstanding Delegation award, the highest recognition a team can achieve in competition, individual students also won Outstanding Delegates in Committee and Outstanding Position Paper. Andrea Blockinger (Anthropology) and Kendall Haun (Political Science) received recognition as Outstanding Delegates in Committee for their work on the Environment Assembly. Andrew Hwang (Political Science) and Arely Solis (History) wrote a position paper for the High Commissioner of Refugees which was distinguished as an Outstanding Position Paper. This year’s team received recognition for all possible awards given by the conference.
To prepare for the April 14-19 conference, team members spent the spring semester researching Argentina’s stance on various issues and writing position papers. At the conference, they represented the country in multiple committees and collaborated with other student delegations to write resolutions.
The team is advised by Dr. Marc Scarcelli, who also teaches the spring semester course.
