English Graduate Students at Huntington Rare Book Talk

On February 19, 2015, graduate students from English 552 Victorian Minds taught by Professor Dewey Hall attended a curator led "Rare Books Talk" by Alan Jutzi, Avery Chief Curator at the Huntington Library.

The students had been reading English Romantic and Victorian literature from the 19th century, and Alan Jutzi showed 1st editions such as Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh, and Oscar Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray among many other texts.

However, Jutzi also showed original, rare copies of hand colored drawings from William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience and a manuscript folio in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's own hand from his famous elegy In Memoriam ​… absolutely priceless.

The eager-eyed English graduate students gazed with amazement as the textual treasures were shown with interesting anecdotes. The experience was truly memorable and meaningful.
