Dr. Dewey Hall Gives German Society for English Romanticism Keynote Address
October 3, 2022
The the German Society for English Romanticism (GER) held its 19th annual conference this fall and featured a keynote address by Dr. Dewey Hall.
His talk, "The Ecology of the Goslar Verses: Weather, Pico Viejo, and Material Objects," was delivered on Saturday, October 1. In it, Dr. Hall examined the climactic effect of the Pico Viejo eruption on Tenerife, which induced the anomalous 1798–1799 winter chill in the Northern Hemisphere, by documenting records of severe river freezes, climatological studies, and firsthand observations. He argued that, together, the Pico Viejo eruption and weather created conditions by which Wordsworth remained housebound, inducing poetry about material objects.
More information about the conference, including its full program, are on the Romantic Ecologies 2022 conference website.
