Revisioning GE Learning Outcomes Project
GE Meaning and Purpose Statement (GEMPS)
The GE experience asks that students and faculty in our inclusive polytechnic community engage a breadth of subjects to encourage intellectual flexibility, empathy, creativity, curiosity, and rigor. The learning that takes place in GE supplements and complements the academic major. GE brings together diverse ways of knowing and doing to strengthen foundational skills, drive innovation, and adapt to new opportunities. Furthermore, it enables us to develop a deep understanding of one's self and respect for the complex identities of others and to face the critical and ethical decisions we encounter throughout our lives.
In 2019, Cal Poly Pomona developed and adopted a formal GE Meaning and Purpose Statement (GEMPS), an important step in revitalizing our GE program as described in our Strategic Plan. One of our subsequent steps is to update our GE Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) to reflect and capture the ideas in that statement. Aligning GE SLOs more intentionally with our academic master plan is key in connecting these relationships, and making it more accessible for faculty to engage meaningfully in CPP’s assessment efforts to strengthen teaching and learning, and to communicate the importance of GE to our students.
In Summer 2020, an interdisciplinary team attended the AAC&U Institute on GE and Assessment, during which new GE learning outcomes were drafted to reflect the GEMPS and to strengthen the alignment of our various learning outcomes, as recommended by our 2019-2020 WSCUC accreditation visit.
