AMM Student's Designs Featured in Fashion Show

May 2, 2024

A Cal Poly Pomona apparel merchandising and management student recently had his designs displayed at a fashion show at the historic Los Angeles Union Station.

Isaiah Wallis, a fifth-year student in the apparel product development emphasis, had designed two looks that models wore on the runway at the Sustainable Student Fashion Show on Earth Day, April 22.

The Modesto native heard about the show on social media and decided to participate because it aligned with his brand.

“I own a sustainable fashion brand called From Zay W/Love, and an Earth Day Fashion Show felt like a good way to show off my work,” Wallis said.

The first look Wallis designed was the Godhead long-sleeve t-shirt and the W/Love lounge pants outfit. They were made from four recycled t-shirts for minimal waste and fiber-reactive dyes.

The second look was the “As Above, So Below” ensemble, which featured a dress and a sculpted back jacket. The dress is made from two tank tops shaped to fit the body better, while the jacket is a cropped formal jacket made from pants to create a minimal-waste design and shaped to mimic the musculoskeletal structure of the back.

The fashion show was sponsored by Metrolink as part of Earth Day celebrations. The competition featured sustainable designs by 23 Southern California high school and college students.

Wallis said he appreciated being able to see the creativity in other students’ designs.

“With my designs, I gained good experience from further working on these products and receiving reactions from the audience and others,” he said. “I feel I am a capable designer with a good future in making minimal-waste designs.”

Wallis’s career goal is to become an independent designer and artist who also assists clothing brands with sustainable design and manufacturing.
