Pre-Vet Org Elects CPP Students as Officers,
May 3, 2023
Three Cal Poly Pomona students were elected as officers for a national pre-veterinary medical organization.
Arely Navarro, Jazmin Delgado, and Karen Hung were chosen as president, vice president, and webmaster, respectively, for the American Pre-Veterinary Medical Association.
Their election occurred at the APVMA National Symposium sponsored by Ross University and held in Louisville, Ky., March 24-25.
The annual two-day event brings together prospective pre-veterinary students from clubs all over the country. It allows them to learn more about the field of veterinary medicine and to speak with representatives from different veterinary schools.
Navarro takes the place of Christine Berry, another Cal Poly Pomona student who served as APVMA President for the 2022-2023 academic year.
Animal and Veterinary Science Lecturer Dr. Kathleen Earle, who attended the symposium with more than 30 students with the Cal Poly Pomona Pre-Veterinary Club, was awarded the APVMA Advisor of the Year.
"I am so proud of our Cal Poly Pre-Vet Club members for exhibiting the desire and fortitude to serve on the APVMA Board," Earle said. "Christine Berry set a precedent for our involvement, and we will continue to make significant contributions on the national level."
While in Kentucky, the students had the opportunity to visit Jonabell Thoroughbred Farm in Lexington, Ky. and were treated to a tour by Susan Kellogg, who represents the famous farm.
Kellogg, who is a horse lover and a longtime fashion industry executive and consultant, serves on the Huntley College Board of Advisors and the Cal Poly Pomona Philanthropic Foundation’s Board of Directors.
She is the great-great-grandaughter of W.K. Kellogg, the cereal magnate whose Pomona horse farm became the Cal Poly Pomona campus.
The students toured the breeding shed, trophy room, and paddocks, and met several outstanding thoroughbred racehorses including Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winners.
Before returning to Pomona, they also toured the Kentucky Derby interactive museum at Churchill Downs.
"Our trip to Kentucky was educational and inspirational," Earle said, "and created unity within the club that will be reflected in the new board and here at home."
