Students Gain Hands-On Experience at Pumpkin Fest

November 8, 2022

T-shirts. Animal toys. Nutrition counseling,

Student clubs have long had a role in the Cal Poly Pomona Pumpkin Fest, and this year, apparel merchandising and management and nutrition students had a lot to offer visitors and gained learn-by-doing experience in the process.

The apparel merchandising and management students (AMM) offered their own wares for sale, while the nutrition students provided education.

Every weekend, AMM students set up a booth for ApparelScapes, the microbusiness run by senior capstone students in the fashion retailing option under faculty supervision.

Through the booth, the students sold a variety of items, including sweatshirts, t-shirts, tote bags, and animal toys.

A sweatshirt with a pumpkin and scarecrow design was so popular that it almost sold out the first weekend. The students developed the design, printed it in-house, transferred it to the sweatshirts, and priced and tagged them for sale.

Other AMM student clubs – Apparel Merchandising and Management Association, Fashion Society, and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists – also participated on several weekends during the month, offering games and other activities.Stu

Meanwhile, more than 40 students from the NTR 3450A Nutrition Education and Counseling class hosted an interactive booth the event, where they engaged thousands of adults and children.

Under the supervision of Lecturer Sangeeta Shrivastava, the students worked in shifts of four to five at a time, giving out handouts on topics ranging from MyPlate and Smart Snacking to Food, Fun, and Fitness.
