May 2, 2022
A team of Cal Poly Pomona students took second place in a regional collegiate food science competition.
Graduate student Dion Chang and undergraduates Brenda Kwong, Alex Mathios, and Elvira Atmadja competed against teams from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal State Long Beach, and Chapman University at the Pacific Southwest College Bowl.
The event, which was held on April 23 at Cal State Long Beach, is a Jeopardy-style competition where students were quizzed on their knowledge of food science.
The College Bowl was sponsored by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association and the Southern California Institute of Food Technologists Section.
In addition to the four students who competed, Chowon Yun, Shuting Chen, and Clarissa Artadi formed part of the Cal Poly Pomona team. They assisted with practice rounds and creating study questions and also served as alternates in case one of the other four students was unable to compete.
Karoline Harrison, a lecturer in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, worked with the team for a year as its coach/advisor.
